NOVA SCOTIA LIGHTHOUSE WALKING TOUR ©2002
Developed by: Anne Kay
The Nova Scotia Lighthouse Walking Tour was developed in response to the ever decreasing financial resources being made available for
the ever increasing need for physical fitness programmes for our youth in Nova Scotia schools.
The programme consists of a virtual walking tour of most of the lighthouses located around the province of Nova Scotia. Participants
walk over designated areas, indoors and out, and record their accumulated distances. In the program, distances are proportional where one
kilometer walked may equal ten actual kilometers. Once they have walked the equivalent distance
between designated lighthouses, they receive a reward (incentive) such as collector cards, bookmarks, puzzles, 3-d lighthouses etc..
The programme has spread beyond the school system as community groups, such as weight loss and senior citizens’ clubs, have
taken up the challenge of getting more physically fit.
The Nova Scotia Lighthouse Walking Tour web page, along with the NSLPS site, contains all the information and resources needed to
develop a Walking Tour programme for your school or group. So, let’s get walking and have fun.
