Sir Samuel Cunard and Nova Scotia Lighthouses

Who knew! Samuel Cunard not only founded the famous steamship line, but he was also a Commissioner of Lighthouses for Nova Scotia! John Langley, President of the Cunard Steamship Society and a Board Member of the NSLPS will talk about Cunard's role in establishing lighthouses here, especially the huge timber lighthouse on Seal Island, Canada's second oldest wooden lighthouse. His talk will be illustrated with little known images of the famous lighthouse.

More about Seal Island.

Hands On! Demonstrations of Lighthouse Equipment
from the Golden Age of Lightkeeping
See how lightkeepers lit their lamps and sounded their foghorns in the era when Nova Scotia had over 200 staffed lightstations. In this joint program between the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic and the Nova Scotia Lighthouse Preservation Society, museum curator Dan Conlin, and society volunteers will explain and demonstrate the secrets of lighthouse lamps, lenses, and foghorns. And you'll be able to help us bring light to a lens and crank up a foghorn. Please arrive by 7:00 or earlier for programmes. Seating is limited.

Wednesday, April 27, 2005: ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Resurrecting Borden's Wharf Lighthouse
The Borden's Wharf Lighthouse near Canning was abandoned over eighty years ago, and after many years used as a pigsty and as an information bureau. It's hard to believe it could be restored and re-lit, but that's exactly what happened last September. Meet members of the Fieldwood Heritage Society who brought about this miracle and learn how Kevin Woods' students at East Kings Vocational School built the new gallery and lantern. This is one of the most amazing projects to receive a grant from the JM Kaplan Fund. Don't miss this fascinating story!

About Trips and Programmes
During the winter months NSLPS presents public programmes at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, in Halifax, for our members and others who are interested. These have ranged from lightkeepers telling their stories, to historians giving the results of research, to displays and lighting of antique lighthouse apparatus. We look for subjects people who like lighthouses would find interesting. If you have an idea for a programme, and someone who could do it, get in touch with the society by e-mail!

In the summer, we host guided trips to light stations. Unfortunately, due to the concern of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans regarding environmental contamination in lighthouse buildings, we are no longer able to take trip participants inside the buildings. Though this is not a happy situation, we're finding that visiting these places (some of which are hard to get to on your own), seeing the unique buildings, and enjoying the ocean environment is still a thrill for everyone who comes along. These trips remain very popular.

The following are our Trips and Programmes for the next few months. For further information or to register, e-mail NSLPS
